The state teachers union has sufficient signatures to qualify its margin tax petition, and it reports having paid 205 circulators a total of $460,000. That's according to the secretary of state -- documents attached here. Now that the raw numbers of 152,713 signatures has been counted -- more than twice as many as were needed -- clerks will now examine statutory amounts of signatures in selected counties. They have nine days to do so. But remember: The state Supreme Court has to decide next...
Mark Hutchison, who parlayed his role as Nevada's lawyer fighting Obamacare to a state Senate seat, formed a political action committee three days after he was elected this month. Records show Hutchison formed "Nevada Strong, Inc," on Nov. 9, with its purpose "to support political candidates and causes." Oh? Who? And when? Hutchison surely wouldn't be thinking of running for attorney general right after getting elected, just as his colleague Greg Brower is, would he? I am sure this is just to...
If you think I’m good at predicting election outcomes, I’m just as prescient when it comes to what certain Nevada luminaries (some anthropomorphism required) will give thanks for over their turkeys on Thursday: ►Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid: That he didn’t need Nevada’s Senate seat to retain his scepter. Mitt Romney’s invisible tax returns. His beautiful friendship of 25 years with Dean Heller. ►Sen. Dean Heller: The House Ethics Committee. The House Ethics Committee. The House Ethics...
Nevada's polling oddities, including overestimating GOP support and a "newspaper's" horrible record with surveys, is explored in a post for Latino Decisions by UNLV Professor David Damore. Damore found that polling here, as I have pointed out, has underestimated Democratic strength in surveys for the last three cycles, and he singles out Mason-Dixon, once used by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, and Survey USA, now used by the "newspaper," as prime evidence of the phenomenon. Damore also explored...
This morning, I asked subscribers to Flash (you can sign up on the site) this trivia question: During the 1993 Legislature, how many lawmakers were there who would later run for statewide office and who are they?  Lots of folks took a stab at it, but here is the correct answer: 10 (11 if you count one who started to run but never filed) Here they are: State Sen. Tom Hickey -- Secretary of state, 1994 State Sen. Sue Lowden--U.S. Senate, 2010 State Sen. Joe Neal -- Governor, 2002 State Sen. Ray...
Tonight: A very personal "Ralston Reports" as I talk about my experience with adoption and we talk to experts and others who have adopted. Here's a link to the state adoption site, with information and pictures of some children awaiting adoption.
