A few weeks after he stunned the Nevada political world, especially elected officials and activists in his own party, with a “visual verification” plan (Don’t call it voter ID!), Secretary of State Ross Miller is in fence-mending mode. Or explanatory mode. Or "what I meant to say" mode. Miller acknowledged on “Ralston Reports” shortly after Review-Journal reporter Ed Vogel broke the story that it was not his most graceful unfurling of a policy initiative (damn media didn’t help). Beyond a few...
It’s time to start keeping track of these baby steps. As Gov. Brian Sandoval returns to his centrist ways in all things, from taxes to immigration, he is sending signals that he is not the same guy who ran to the right of a corpse named Jim Gibbons in 2010. Two years plus after embracing the Arizona law (SB1070), Sandoval is starting to reach out to the Hispanic community – and he did it again Monday with the announcement of Brian Ayala’s appointment to the Nevada Commission on Tourism. Ayala...
Not a huge response, but here it is, folks:     It's a reasonable first step and protects the integrity of the process.   44% (47 votes) It's an obvious ploy to appeal to Republicans as he prepare to run for AG.   39% (41 votes) It plays into the hands of Republicans who want to eventually demand voter ID cards.   16% (17 votes) Total votes: 105   New poll is up.
Welcome to this extra edition of The Weekly Report. I didn’t plan on one this weekend, dear Flashees, but with my trip unexpectedly canceled, here’s a treat for you – some interesting nuggets from Federal Election Commission reports filed after the election: The state Democratic Party raised $14 million, Caesars Entertainment loaded up on GOP House leaders and Sheldon Adelson gave to Dina Titus. Much more, too. What you will see below are some highlights of a variety of reports, which generally...
Incoming Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick this week formed a leadership PAC, meaning lobbyists better amplify their budgets. The Western Leadership PAC was filed Tuesday by longtime Democratic Party lawyer Bradley Schrager. The stated purpose: "To promote and encourage legislative leadership." Indeed. The only officer listed is Erin Smith, who was an aide to the last female speaker, Barbara Buckley. She is the daughter of state Sen. Debbie Smith. Erin Smith, who later confirmed she will be the...
We're doing a program next week on the ongoing controversy over seating Andrew Martin, the Democrat elected to the Assembly last month despite being ruled ineligible to run by a judge. Kelly Hurst, who lost to Martin, has agreed to come on "Ralston Reports." But Martin, in an email to my producer, Dana Gentry, had this to say: "I disagreed with the filing of this last-minute political lawsuit--which has its facts wrong--and take issue with the judge's decision in what was a rushed and...
Good morning, everyone. By Jan. 16, when Gov. Brian Sandoval delivers his State of the State, no one will remember any dustup about transparency and the budget. Once again, Gov. Sunny showed his political skills, after an unusual misstep, reversing himself on a silly scheme to keep agency requests secret. With a media onslaught that began with a rumble weeks ago when longtime capital reporter Geoff Dornan actually got up during a meeting and protested and culminated with a torrent of...
