Speaker to County Commission: Only two candidates "we were particularly impressed with"

After meeting with candidates to replace Steven Brooks, expelled by the Assembly, Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick has written to Clark County commissioners to recommend two of them as possibilites: Tyrone Thompson and Meli Pulido.

Thompson, who works for the county, and Pulido, who used to work for the city of Las Vegas, were among nine candidates who were seeking the appointment, which the commission is scheduled to make Tuesday.

Kirkpatrick wrote (letter attached here) there were "only two candidates we were particularly impressed with....(Thompson and Pulido) stood out in a crowded field with the best grasp of the issues important to Nevadans, and with the experience to get to work immediately after first house passage."

That deadline is April 23, meaning the appointee will be in Carson City for only the last third of the session.

Kirkpatrick had made it clear after Brooks was expelled that she preferred a minority candidate. A minority has held Brooks' seat for almost a decade and a half. Brooks is half-Hispanic and half-African-American; Thompson is African-American and Pulido is Hispanic. You can see their resumes here.

The choices are a blow to the Culinary Union, which embraced ex-police union lobbyist Michelle Jotz. Then again, maybe the commission won't listen to the speaker....

I make Thompson a favorite because of his county ties. And now this is either irrelevant or helpful.
