Welcome to the Weekly Report.
This week:
1. The debut of the Weekly Campaign Insiders
2. Setting the WCI baseline for Campaign ‘14
3. State of the Races
I have gathered, as I did during Session ’13, a diverse group of insiders to provide premium subscribers with exclusive access to what is REALLY going on inside campaigns this cycle. I have asked them to put aside their biases and paychecks to provide me – and thus you – with insight you will not find anywhere else. You will know – as you did...
In 1985, as a youthful, ingenuous reporter for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, I sat next to the general manager at a Lake Tahoe awards banquet and asked him about the Las Vegas Sun.
It went something like this:
“When will the Sun go out of business?” I wondered of the competition, which I had, in my competitive zeal, come to think of as the Evil Empire.
“Oh, we’ll never let it go out of business,” Earl Johnson told me. “We will first go into a Joint Operating Agreement with them to keep the Sun...
UPDATE: Guy Hobbs, the numbers guru who advised the panel, tells me that while the commdoity rate is going up by 60 percent, it is muted by other factors in the bill. That is, the commeodity rate is only a component of the bill, so it will be partially absorbed by others.
He estimates the highest residential increases at about 13 or 14 percent. That will still cause some eyebrow-raising, but perhaps not head-exploding.
Take a look at the appendices of the report here, espcially Appendix I, for...
Lieutenant governor anointee Mark Hutchison, handpicked by Gov. Brian Sandoval and backed by the GOP Establishment, raised about $350,000 at his first event.
That estimated figure, from an insider with knowledge and one who does not (as some do) exaggerate, must be the most ever raised by a candidate for lieutenant governor -- or perhaps even an incumbent LG running for re-election. For context, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki reported $138,000 raised in the year before he ran for re-election in 2010...
Good morning, everyone. One day before the big court hearing on that nasty Sun/RJ vs. Brian Greenspun suit and yet anotherdocument was filed. This one is a doozy, as is the BG affidavit that speaks of his anguish in going uncompensated while trying to keep the Sun afloat and the derogation of bedroom bloggers (Hey, it's a converted bedroom!). I kid you not. We have his lawyer, Leif Reid, scheduled for tonight on the program.
I continue to feel as if there are no heroes in this story, and the...
Becky Harris, who lost an Assembly race last cycle, is preparing a campaign against Democratic state Sen. Justin Jones in a contest that could determine which party controls the upper house.
Harris is likely to run with the imprimatur of the Senate GOP leadership -- she was recruited by Minority Leader Michael Roberson, I'm told. She's a lawyer who was just this week named by Clark County Commission Chairman Steve Sisolak (!) to a mobile home committee.
Privately, the GOP folks are touting her...
