Start at the bottom.     Jon Ralston @RalstonReports That $235K is just for student scholarships. No final numbers on dinner itself, which UNLV spox says we "expect...will generate a profit."         DetailsOpen 10h Jon Ralston @RalstonReports Announcement that raised $235,000 at the event. I have one word for those who paid: Suckers!         DetailsOpen 10h Jon Ralston @RalstonReports "What do I want to do with the rest of my life? ...Whether it's in politics or the...
Assemblywoman Lucy Flores, being pummeled on TV and given up for dead by many Democrats, is within striking distance of state Sen. Mark Hutchison, according to a poll conducted for her campaign. The survey, conducted by the Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling, which uses automated calls, found Hutchison at 46 percent and Flores at 42 percent, just inside the 4.1 percent margin of error. It was conducted of 581 likely voters Oct. 11-12 for Flores' campaign. Pollster Tom Jensen, in a memo,...
I've seen a lot of crazy things in Nevada politics, but the longest running embarrassment in the arena has set a new standard: The Nevada Republican Party reported raising nothing. That's right, since June, the state GOP has taken in no contributions of mroe than $1,000, so its report is dotted with zeroes. Oh, there are dozens of small contributions -- $8.25 and $35 and $50 -- but that just adds up to a few grand. And yet the party of fiscal conservatives spent $65,000, including nearly $16,...
Secretary of State Ross Miller and attorney Adam Laxalt went at it for an hour on Friday on Vegas PBS, with all the nastiness and ferocity that has marked the media campaigns bubbling forth in a strikingly contentious debate. Considering this has become the marquee race in Nevada, with the most spending and arguably the most at stake, I thought I’d take a look at some of what was said that requires exposition. (Frankly, I wish I had time to do this with all debates.) I have no illusions that...
You wouldn't know it because the newspapers haven't covered his passing, but a venerable, respected lawmaker died last week. Jack Jeffrey, a stalwart of the labor movement and a former Assembly majority leader, died on Friday after a fight with cancer. Jeffrey was one of those rare partisans who was liked and respected by nearly everyone, no matter their party or special interest. His voice, made more gravelly by all those cigarettes, was as distinctive as any to ever resound in the chamber....
"Only a marriage between a male and female shall be recognized and given effect in this state." --- Nevada ‘s constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage Twelve years ago last week, same-sex marriage advocates held a candlelight vigil to protest Question 2 on the ballot. That proposition, pushed by the Coalition for the Protection of Marriage, had passed overwhelmingly the previous cycle and would have banned same-sex unions in Nevada if it passed again. Those attending the vigil decried...
In one of the more brutal ads of the season, LG hopeful Mark Hutchison is up today with a new attack ad on Lucy Flores, using a kerfuffle over using campaign funds for personal use. This will leave a mark.
The folks fighting to retain the ban withdrew at both Ninth Circuit and Supreme Court. Documents attached. Same-sex marriage is coming, folks.
