UPDATE: Five days after I posted this, the county has made it public. I have attached Walker's letter here.
UPDATE NO. 2: County Manager Don Burnette today informed commissioners he will appoint Rosemary Vassiliadis, Walker's longtime assistant, to replace him. here's his email to commissioners, who must ratify the choice:
As you are aware, Randy had recently informed me that he was considering retirement from the County after many years of service. After some thought and consideration, Randy Walker has given notice of his intent to retire from the County as the Director of Aviation effective June 3rd. I know you will join me in thanking Randy for his many years of service and his significant contributions to McCarran International Airport and the airport system in Southern Nevada.
Earlier this afternoon I appointed Rosemary Vassiliadis to the position of Director of Aviation. Rosemary brings 15 years of service as the Deputy Director of Aviation and possesses a keen understanding of all aspects of Airport operations. More importantly, Rosemary understands the importance of McCarran International Airport to our local economy and our tourism industry. I will be respectfully requesting your ratification of Rosemary's appointment on your March 5th meeting.
Rosemary has shared with me that she will be scheduling meetings with each of you in the coming days. Of course, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Randy Walker, who has been at the helm of McCarran International Airport since 1997 and recently oversaw the opening of Terminal 3, will announce his retirement next week, sources confirm.
The obvious choice to succeed him as head of one of the country's busiest airports is his longtime deputy, Rosemary Vassiliadis. I understand that Walker is pushing for her and County Manager Don Burnette is likely to recommend her to the board.
His retirement is expected to take effect in June.
