Remember this case? Despite an attempt by Jeff Guinn and his lawyers to tarnish journalist Dana Gentry's reputation with a "when did you stop beating your wife?" type of inquiry, the state Supreme Court has quashed the attempt and in so doing likely strengthened Nevada's shield law.   The decision is attached.
So what will high-profile Nevadans be giving thanks for on Thursday? I happen to know: ►Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid: For John Boehner’s Tea Party anarchists. For Sharron Angle (never stop thanking God for her). For being able to interview political editor candidates at the Las Vegas Sun. ►Sen. Dean Heller: For re-election being five years away. For No Labels, so no real permanent positions. For his ultra-professional staff. ►Rep. Steven Horsford: For modern medicine. For North Las Vegas’...
There are six real conservatives and the same number of "true liberals" in the Nevada Legislature, according to one of the older conservative rating groups in the country. The American Conservative Union used 18 Assembly votes and 15 Senate votes, counting votes for taxes, gay marriage and the big NV Energy bill against lawmakers. The full report, attached here, found no one had a 100 percent rating. The conservatives named were: State Sens. Don Gustavson and James Settelmeyer and Assemblymen...
Rep. Joe Heck, who has been pummeled by progressives on immigration reform, met Monday evening with a broad spectrum of groups and presented his own bill. I've learned that the meeting, which took place at a Humana office in Henderson, was attended by two dozen or so people, including progressives, gamers, business types and labor leaders. Heck retierated to the group that he would not sign on to the Democratic bill, House Resolution 15 and that it would not pass because Speaker John Beohner...
Lieutenant governor hopeful Sue Lowden has a Reno fundraiser featuring daughters of two recently deceased political icons, old-time city business players, an independent-minded assemblyman and an ousted assemblyman. Patty Cafferata, the former treasurer and daughter of the late Rep. Barbara Vucanovich, and Leslie Raggio, whose father was the late legislative legend Bill Raggio, are on the Dec. 5 invite (see below) at the Siena. David Colvin, who invested in the property after winning $158...
UPDATE, 11/23/13: Assembly Majority Leader William Horne responded Saturday morning. He said he has "tremendous respect for Jim Rogers but I disagree on this particular issue." Horne said Provost John White is "ready to be president." Horne added that he dealt with White during the Legislature, including discussions of the system funding formula. "He's been involved with it," Horne said. "I do believe we have somebody right here in our own backyard (for president)," Horne said. "And for the...
UPDATE, 11/23/13: Leo Blenitsky, who heads the Vegas chapter of the Republican Jewish Coalition, defended hosting a birther by referring to him innocuously as an "author." His comment below speaks for itself, in all its grandeur and literacy: So Obama associating with convicted Terrorists and Racists Reverends is not relevant, but if someone has a popular best selling author as a speaker at their event that the left-wing hates then that is really bad! Do I understand the rules correctly...
This just went out, a letter to the community from Chancellor Dan Klaich and Regent Chair Kevin Page, but more a note of reassurance after the sudden announcement of UNLV President Neal Smatresk's departure:   November 21, 2013 To the UNLV Community: Yesterday we all heard news that our President at UNLV would be taking another job. First, we want to congratulate the University of North Texas on securing a great leader and thank Neal and Debbie for seven outstanding years of service to UNLV,...
“Nevada Health Link would like to thank each family, individual and small business that has signed up for health insurance. We will be mailing out enrollment information very soon.” ---Tweet from Nevada’s Obamacare exchange, 11/20/13 “The very real and harmful consequences of this ill-conceived law are now being experienced by not just Nevadans, but people throughout the country. “ ----Gov. Brian Sandoval, the same day Nevada Health Link is Brian Sandoval. Brian Sandoval is Nevada Health Link....
Wynn Resorts, which has been absent from the Nevada Resort Association for years, is a lone wolf no more. I've confirmed that Steve Wynn's company has joined the pack, which includes Station Casinos, Boyd Gaming, Caesers Entertainment, MGM Resorts International and....Las Vegas Sands. “For decades, the Nevada Resort Association (NRA) has served as the voice of the gaming industry on issues of critical importance to our state," NRA boss Virginia Valentine said when I asked her.  "Steve Wynn’s...
